so my photography exam is coming up next week and i’ve just had a thrilling afternoon going through the photographs i took for it yesterday. i thought i’d tell tumblr all about it.
everyone in our class kinda does the same thing. there are a number of taboos that everyone does and seldomly very well: 1) landscape photography, 2) fashion photography, 3) ‘street’ photography. in the past i’ve felt i’ve had my ideas pinched. i usually wouldn’t mind, but it’s just getting boring.
i’ve done so many things to death these past few years for exams and my coursework. landscape photography, street photography, abstart photography, and all with considerable success. but i felt that this time i would really push the boat out and do something a little more ‘risque’ than sunsets and strangers on the street. i decided to do sex.
well, that’s a lie actually. i like to think there’s a lot more depth to it than that. the exam topic that i chose is WAYS OF SEEING which made me think of the book of the same name by John Berger. in it he discusses gender theory and offshoots of that such as ‘male gaze’ and ‘queer theory’. ways of viewing people that i was already quite familiar with through Media Studies and looking at film. Berger looks at it in an Art History context and so have i. i started with the Renaissance obsession with voyeurism to contemporary representations of gender from artists like Sarah Lucas.
it’s flesh galore and i felt i’d done it justice at first. with plenty of tact and due care and attention. however, i realised that was exactly because of my own views. my photos were nice, but they didn’t really challenge the viewer.
in rolls the humour and crudeness and after two hours in demi’s bedroom yesterday with us both in varying degrees of nakedness i came out with quite an awesome photo series. this is just one of them. but i think this is where i am going to head by the time it is time for my exam next week. i’m excited about this project all over again. you can see the rest of the photos i’ve taken so far here.
oh, and the socks were kinda just for shits and giggles too.
